Official move to Paris, and celebration thereafter

As many of you know, on Thursday I made the official move into my new place in Paris! Everything is even more wonderful than how I remembered it the first time! I don't want to share too many photos, for privacy reasons, but here's a peek at my bedroom:

See that desk? That's where the thesis magic is happening, baby!

So to celebrate this momentous occasion - and no longer having to buy RER A tickets to get out to Maisons-Laffitte in Zone 4 - my friend A. and I decided to hit up a tiny crêperie that got some rave reviews from none other than David Lebovitz, our guru for all things Parisian and delicious.

The restaurant is called West Country Girl - but don't be put off by the name! These are some authentic Breton crêpes (with "breton" referring to the region of Brittany, which is indeed in the West of France). It's in the 11e arrondissement, and pretty out of the way. A. and I did an unintentional dry run one night when we got lost looking for the place, then finally found it to be closed (damn those French and their late-August-early-September vacations!).

We were absolutely overwhelmed by the menu - so many choices, such low prices! A student's dream come true.

We started with an appéritif of kir, which came delicious and strong. A. ended up ordering a crêpe with emmental cheese, mushrooms, and egg, while I opted for spinach, goat cheese, and golden raisins. These delights came wrapped in the thinnest of lacy, buttery dark wheat crêpes - that's how you know it's authentically breton!

Since we were celebrating, and the prices were good...and the kir was quite strong...we ended up ordering three desserts to share between the two of us: 1) crêpe with dark chocolate (it came molten on the side for us to pour ourselves, 2) salted butter caramel (authentically breton, and sinfully good, and 3) Gran Marnier flambée.

For those of you traveling with limited French speaking abilities, not to worry - the waitress who served us that night was a friendly New Zealander!

  1. Me to waitress, upon viewing the miracle of those crêpes : Mais franchement, on est vraiment gâtée!

Waitress: What does that mean? That's a new word for me.

    Me: ENGLISH!

  2. Also, your room is orange. My Princeton pseudo-elitism approves ;)
